What is a crotchet in music?
A crotchet is a musical note with the time value of one beat - or a quarter of a semibreve.

In the American terminology, the crotchet is known as a 'quarter note' as it is played for one quarter of the length of a semibreve, or 'whole note'.

The crotchet in music notation appears as a solid black, rounded shape with a stick going up or down, depending on where the note appears on the stave. Like this:

A crotchet rest is equal in time value to a crotchet note. It’s a period of silence that lasts for one beat.
